Leonurus sibiricus is an highly branched, annual or biennial herbaceous plant reaching up to 3 ft tall. The square stems and branches are covered all four sides by a longitudinal groove. The leaves are of 2 types: divided into two segments the lower and middle are long-stalked palmate with lobes, while the higher ones are short-stalked and linear. The pink to purple flowers are grouped in globular whorls layered along a terminal inflorescence. The light brown fruit is an ovoid trigonal achene.
The composition of the essential oil from Leonurus Sibiricus is germacrene D (15.8-27.5%), α-pinene (6.0-13.0%), (E)-β-caryophyllene (4.7-9.3%), α-humulene (3.7-8.8%), cis-β-ocimene (2.3-6.5%), depending on the places of growth. Hierarchical cluster analysis, based on the composition of 10 different essentials oils from Leonurus species, showed that composition of L. glaucescens, growing in Northern Kazakhstan, is similar to L. cardiaca, growing in Lithuania. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons-(E)-β-caryophyllene, germacrene D and á-humulene.
Native to China, Mongolia, and Siberia Leonurus Sibiricus has naturalized in many other parts of the world, including South, Central and North Americas. Prefers part shade, sun, sandy or rocky soil, fields, roadsides and pine forests.
Leonurus sibiricus L. has a history of being used as a traditional and medicinal herb for many years in Asia and Europe. This species is said to have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties and has demonstrated a reduction of intracellular reactive oxygen species.
Siberian Motherwort is said have been used as an relaxant in ancient Chinese medicine, also called marihuanilla (little marijuana) throughout Central America and Mexico. Described as the “little helper” of Don Juan in Carlos Castaneda’s Book; “The teachings of Don Juan”.
