Also Called: lion’s ear,  lion’s tail, minaret flower, red dagga.

Identification

The pollen rich bright colored flowers are most commonly red but can be white, yellow or apricot. Individual petals are tassel-like and consist of a long slender tube with four stamens, with stiff hairs that are rough when touched. The upper lip of the petal is long and hooded and the lower is short and smooth.

Wild Dagga flowers known be a favorite of butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.

Composition

The essential oils of the wild dagga flower are  limonene (7.2-15.6%), (Z)-β-ocimene (7.5-10.8%), γ-terpinene (4.0-4.7%), β-caryophyllene (15.2-19.6%), α-humulene (4.6-6.5%) and germacrene D (18.9-20.0%). Wild Dagga Flowers are also know to contain Leonurine.

History

Wild Dagga Flowers have a long history of possibly uses. The Zulu, Xhosa, Africans and English possibly made a tea of the flowers for a soothing cough and as a cold remedy. This tea may also have be used for the treatment of jaundice, cardiac asthma, hemorrhoids, headaches, chest ailments, bronchitis and epilepsy. The Zulu and Xhosa may make a strong brew of the leaves and possibly use it as a poultice for snakebites. The flowers may also have been smoked in the treatment of epilepsy and partial paralysis. It is known that a tea of leaves and flowers used to be drunk daily by the older generations for water retention, obesity and hemorrhoids.

Wild Dagga Flowers have been wildly known as the euphoric relaxing smoke of the Hottentot Tribe in South Africa.
